The 3 reasons your home is holding you back and how you can stop it from happening.

Updated: Mar 30, 2021

When you think of your home, do any of the following adjectives come to mind?

Overwhelming, cluttered, stressful, draining, messy, chaotic, embarrassing...

You are not alone. Managing a home is a full time job and it’s not an innate skill. But there is light at the end of the tunnel!

These 3 things are holding you back from creating more Joy! Let’s tackle them together.

1. Clutter disguised as “sentimental“ items. I get it. Your daughter loved that stuffed animal when she was 4 and you have so many fond memories of her lugging it around. Or the thoughtful greeting card from your landscaper’s son. Or what about the gift that your mother in law gave you when she got back from vacation but it didn’t match your decor? What memories are you creating with these items now? When was the last time you looked at them, used them, or had them displayed in your home? If you can’t remember or the answer is longer than 6 months, than it’s time to let them go. They are holding you back from finding things you want to use and they are taking up valuable space!

2. The most valuable thing you have in your home (in real estate terms) is square footage. With each piece of furniture, you lose some of that essential space and make it more time-consuming to find things. You want your home working for you, not you working for your home. Utilize shelves where you can to gain back some of the floor space and open up your home. Use hanging shelves in the garage to store bins that hold holiday items, so you can park in there again. Don’t let bulky furniture hold you back!

3. Organizational supplies. I know this one is surprising. How can you have an organized home without organizational supplies? Here’s the deal. You shouldn’t need to buy excess things, in order to store all of your current things. Did you catch that? I’ll rephrase. It’s okay and necessary to contain the items you have, to make them functional and beautiful, BUT if you’re constantly needing to buy more items, in order to make room for all of the things in your home, than you probably have too much. Save yourself the time and money, by downsizing to what you use and love and then purchasing what you need for those items. Anything that doesn’t fit, means it’s time to declutter again!

Your home should be your safe space, where you can unwind from the day, play with your kids or fur babies, soak in the sun and relax. Not create more stress or anxiety from the to-do list that has piled up.

It’s time to change your life, increase the square footage in your home, and create more joy!
